Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 21, 2012

As social problems and the financial costs associated with them continue to plague many of this country’s poorest neighborhoods, Magnolia Place Community Initiative (MPCI) in Los Angeles offers innovative solutions that are gaining national attention. This groundbreaking model for large-scale community change is focused on helping 35,000 vulnerable children living within the five-square, 500 blocks of the West Adams and Figueroa Corridor area break all records of success in their education, health milestones, the nurturing they receive from their family and the economic stability of their family.

What draws them to Magnolia Place is a unique synergy that unites entities rather than separates them, ultimately impacting more families. At the core of this effort are Children’s Bureau, County of Los Angeles Chief Executive Offices and UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families and Communities. They are joined by more than 70 high-profile government and private sector partner organizations that have a shared vision and outcomes for the transformation of this community through a self-organizing, open network.

“Those who are concerned for the public’s welfare are following our learning and development of this new approach. We’re helping parents be stronger for their children. Families that once felt isolated are now reaching out to help each other. Parents are organizing to change their neighborhood. Government and other institutions are working to change their organizational behavior to better help families. What we’re creating is a system where everyone has a part in uplifting the community,” said Alex Morales, president & CEO of Children’s Bureau.

MPCI formed four years and continues to evolve in creating relationships and systems that better help families and those of future generations. The momentum thus far has been enough to peak the interest of notables such as University of Southern California, United Way Worldwide, Brazelton Touchpoints Center, Joan Lombardi (Ph.D./Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services). Recently, Pedro Segarra, Mayor of Hartford, Connecticut came to learn more about MPCI and groups from Tulsa, Oklahoma and another from First 5 Santa Barbara have visits planned. MPCI spokespeople have also presented to groups in New Orleans and Washington, D.C. and serve on panels across the country dedicated to the future well being and capacity of our nation’s children.

“In the U.S. today, there are few if any children’s initiatives that are as inspired, ambitious and hopeful as Magnolia Place. It’s using the best evidence from years of research on what it takes to help children thrive, to craft a thoughtful comprehensive and immensely practical approach to optimizing children’s outcomes. By involving the entire community and cultivating a dynamic network of engaged individual and organizations focused on improving child outcomes, Magnolia Place is promoting real change. As a member of the national Transforming Early Childhood Community Systems (TECCS) network, Magnolia Place is fostering innovative approaches to improving outcomes for children that are of national and international significance” said Dr. Neal Halfon, Director, UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities, Professor of Pediatrics, Community Health Services, and Public Policy.

Magnolia Place Community Initiative is a groundbreaking model for large-scale community mobilization and transformation where children, living in the most vulnerable neighborhoods, break all records of success in their education, health milestones, the nurturing they receive from their family and the economic stability of their family. This is an innovative collaboration of more than 70 county, city and community organizations joined by a shared strategy to build neighborhood resiliency and civic engagement — beyond the traditional multi-service strategy.
Ben E King’s longstanding support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is furthered with his update to Now Let Me Fly which ‘references the biblical story of Ezekiel’s Wheels. The song talks mostly of a promised land. This song might have boosted the morale and spirit of the slaves, giving them hope that there was a place waiting that was better than where they were.’ (Wikipedia)

Now Let Me Fly can be found on iTunes at http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/pioneers-for-a-cure-now-let/id478519219.

The song can be found on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0063PGDPC/ref=dm_ty_trk

Pioneers For A Cure – Songs To Fight Cancer is pleased to offer this track and over 100 other songs to fight cancer on our own website, where over half our donors have upgraded their donations to fight cancer.

Possessing one of the most elegant baritone voices ever, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alumnus Ben E. King’s imprint on the musical landscape is so indelible that an optimum barometer has been set for countless aspiring performers.

‘Now Let Me Fly’ is a song of the Underground Railroad which references the biblical story of Ezekiel’s Wheels. The song is given a stellar reggae arrangement in Ben E. King’s version for Pioneers For A Cure. The track is produced by Greg Wall, who also leads the lush horn section’s driving rhythm.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, founded in 1962, is a leading pediatric treatment and research facility focused on children’s catastrophic diseases.

The cover art for “Now Let Me Fly” is by the Israeli fine artist Mira Sasson, who has painted dozens of portraits of Pioneers For A Cure contributors.

Pioneers For A Cure – Songs To Fight Cancer is the largest showcase of cancer charities on the web. Called ‘[A] stellar model of artist-driven grassroots philanthropy’ by National Geographic, the non-profit project records public domain songs, reinterpreted and made available for donations of as little as $ 1.99. This treasure trove of over 100 songs has been recorded by dozens of artists from around the world including Suzanne Vega, Ben E. King, Tom Chapin, Tom Verlaine, Matt White and David Broza. Fine artist Mira Sasson has painted the Pioneer Portraits of the singers, which are made available as US Postage Stamps to fight cancer. Proceeds from song downloads are donated to artist-selected cancer charities such as the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and Susan G. Koman for the Cure.

In 2012 Pioneers For A Cure – Songs To Fight Cancer continues to support cancer research, cancer treatment and cancer care with digital downloads of important artists singing public domain material. We are proud to be a sponsor of Regina Spektor’s Feb. 23rd HIAS benefit concert at Lincoln Center. Please join us there in support of the organization which helped bring Regina’s Family to the U.S.

Jazz Songs To Fight Cancer and Guitar Songs To Fight Cancer are also planned for release later this year.

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) February 17, 2012

Samueli Institute, a recognized leader in integrative medicine research, has released the results of a blinded, randomized controlled trial (RCT) that finds “biofield healing therapies” reduce fatigue and increase cortisol variability (a biological marker that has been linked to fatigue and depression) in breast cancer survivors. The full results of the study entitled, “Complementary Medicine for Fatigue and Cortisol Variability in Breast Cancer Survivors: A Randomized Controlled Trial,” was recently published in the February 1, 2012 issue of the journal Cancer, a peer-reviewed Interdisciplinary International Journal of the American Cancer Society. A link to the abstract for the study can be found on the publisher’s website (http://www.wiley.com).

Dr. Shamini Jain, Senior Scientist and Program Manager at Samueli Institute and Assistant Professor at University of California San Diego, was the Principal Investigator of the study. Funded by the National Institute of Health/National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine as well as Samueli Institute, the study was conducted at the University of California San Diego.

“Approximately one-third of cancer patients experience significant fatigue up to ten years or more after treatment,” said Dr. Jain. “Even worse, fatigue is often associated with additional problems such as depression and sleep disturbance, interfering with patients’ daily lives. Many times, these patients are too tired to even engage in basic self-care practices like exercise. Unfortunately, there are no gold-standard treatments for treating this persistent fatigue, which is why we wanted to investigate whether biofield healing could offer hope to fatigued cancer survivors as a non-invasive, complementary treatment.”

Biofield therapies, also often referred to as “hands-on-healing,” include techniques such as Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, and Healing Touch. These therapies are thought to work by affecting energy fields that surround and penetrate the human body. A previously published systematic review conducted by Dr. Jain and colleague Dr. Paul Mills of University of California San Diego suggested that biofield therapies are useful in reducing acute pain in a number of populations.

“The take-home message is that there is hope for reducing cancer-related fatigue for these survivors,” noted Dr. Jain. “These and other related therapies can be used as complementary care for cancer patients and survivors. If further larger-scale studies confirm these results, it suggests that these therapies may be very useful to integrate into standard care for cancer patients to reduce and possibly prevent these negative symptoms.”

Along with Dr. Jain, co-authors of the study include Dr. Paul Mills, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego; Dr. John Ives, Director, Brain, Mind and Healing Program at Samueli Institute; Dr. Ian Coulter, Samueli Institute Chair in Policy for Integrative Medicine at RAND Corporation; and Dr. Wayne Jonas, President and CEO, Samueli Institute.

For further information on details of this rigorously designed study, please contact Samueli Institute at http://www.SamueliInstitute.org.

Omaha, NE (PRWEB) February 17, 2012

Only a medical professional can properly diagnose Alzheimer’s. Become aware of the early warning signs and Alzheimer’s stages, to be empowered to get professional help right away.

According to the National Institute on Aging, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), is named after German neuropathology specialist Alois Alzheimer, is the most common form of dementia.

Wikipedia defines dementia as a serious loss of global cognitive ability that can affect memory, language, problem solving and awareness.

Is a parent, relative or loved one becoming forgetful, and can’t remember recent events, such as what day it is, or what grocery item they went to the store to pick up?

They may be showing signs of the first stage of Alzheimer’s disease: early dementia.

In this stage, individuals with Alzheimer’s retain some insight into their situation and environment, but every day become more confused and forgetful. They may begin to lose language skills, have trouble handling money and paying bills, forget once-familiar tasks and have some personality changes.

It may seem that a loved one is battling the condition and struggles to stay on top of their daily activities and routine.

During this early dementia stage it can be especially difficult for the family to manage issues around driving and money management, but this is why it is important to recognize the symptoms so that proper care can be implemented, before there is an accident at home or on the road.

There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, and the spouse or family members are often the main care providers. This can become especially difficult and stressful as the condition progresses.

Don’t avoid concerns that a loved one may be experiencing any of these early symptoms. Instead the best thing to do is contact a doctor right away. Early detection may make it easier to get help and assistance to treat and aid the family member.

Read a series of articles designed to help inform concerned individuals about Alzheimer’s and dementia. Included are resources and services available to assist your family member who may be struggling with the condition.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) February 14, 2012

It’s winter time and consumers need to keep an eye on the good and bad about ultraviolet light exposure to their skin and eyes. “Light sensitive cells in the retina of eyes help regulate the normal sleep-wake cycle and may provide one reason why people love the sun. During winter, protecting the eyes from the sun and harmful ultraviolet light should be on everyone’s mind, and here are some tips to be mindful of during wintertime and winter sport activity,” according to Dr. Sandy T. Feldman of ClearView Eye & Laser Medical Center. “Pay attention to protecting your eyes and your kid’s eyes. Wear goggles or wrap around sunglasses that block 100% of UV-A and B light rays. And remember that at altitude, everyone is more susceptible to the ultraviolet light effects so use protection and do not be fooled by the clouds,” continued Dr. Feldman.

A recent study published in Archives of Dermatology, found that most skiers and snowboarders did not routinely practice safe tips for guarding themselves against the harmful ultraviolet light rays of the sun.*1,*2 Unfortunately today, young adults still seek to tan their skin indoors via tanning salons despite the known carcinogenic risks.*3 Scientific studies clearly show that sun exposure may increase the risk of developing eye diseases such as cataracts, age related macular degeneration and growths of the eye.*4,*5

“Light rays can reflect strongly off the snow and damage the skin and eyes, even on cloudy days. Most people do not know that while skiing, exposure to UV light increases during late winter to early spring and at elevation *6,” said Dr. Sandy T. Feldman of ClearView Eye & Laser Medical Center. “The highest UV rating was found at Mammoth Mountain, CA1. It is very important for everyone to protect their eyes during all sports by wearing sunglasses or goggles that block 100% of the UV light,” said Dr. Feldman.

“For those looking to keep their summer tan in winter, they will be shocked to learn that indoor tanning, results in 75% increase in risk of melanoma and even, ocular melanoma as well *7,*8,” Dr. Feldman stated.

Not all ultraviolet light is bad. Doctors have also been harnessing the power of ultraviolet light to provide a new treatment for a medical condition in the eye, which causes extreme shortsightedness, and difficulty in distance vision. This treatment, known as crosslinking, strengthens the front surface of the eye to prevent the eye from continually changing its shape and vision to get blurrier and blurrier.

As a leader in the field of ophthalmology, Dr. Feldman has participated in FDA clinical studies of custom LASIK. Currently, she is involved in studies of a new treatment to halt the progression of keratoconus, a disease in which the fitting of contact lenses can become challenging. In 2009, she was one of ten laser eye care providers in the U.S. to receive the Goldline Award as seen Forbes Magazine. In 2010, she was awarded the Silver Elite RealSelf award, and in 2011, she was awarded Top Doc San Diego, inducted into the prestigious American College of Ophthalmic Surgeons and was one of nation’s 15 leading laser eye surgeons as seen in Newsweek magazine.

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 14 February 2012

With more and more NHS trusts needing to identify new technologies to help improve the way hospitals can deliver patient services efficiently, South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has embarked on a project with BigHand to implement a digital dictation solution. The BigHand digital dictation system will replace the current analogue equipment which is outdated and will provide the secretaries with state of the art technologies which will increase efficiencies throughout the department.

The project will initially begin in the trust’s orthopaedic directorate and will be rolled out in to approximately 60 authors, 30 secretaries and two administrators, with the option to roll out the system further in the trust at a later date. BigHand will integrate with the trust’s PAS system and BigHand’s Clinic Builder module to help pre-populate patient demographic information. The digital dictation workflow software system at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will be assisted by Olympus DR-2000 and DS-5000 devices.

Marie Scott, Trauma Business Manager at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust commented:

“The process with BigHand will now improve:

The orthopaedic directorate covers two sites which are 20 miles apart. Consultants work between both sites and medical notes are transported accordingly. Depending on volume of workload, typists also need to work between both sites. The introduction of digital dictation will reduce the transfer of staff and records between sites and by doing so increase the efficiency of the service.

The orthopaedic secretaries and typists are currently using an analogue system to produce all patient correspondence. It is envisaged that as BigHand uses a word based program this will be easy for the users to adapt to and provide improved functionality.

Why the orthopaedic directorate chose BigHand:

Having evaluated a number of systems and established that efficiencies can be made the orthopaedic team decided to procure the BigHand digital dictation system. The team were impressed at how BigHand encourage user involvement in their product development and the simplicity of the system from a user’s perspective.

What working practices will change:

In implementing the BigHand digital dictation system, the typists will no longer need to work across both sites. They will receive work real time and will not have to wait for clinics to be transported to their offices.

Digital dictation eliminates the need for whole tapes to be listened to, when trying to identify important clinical correspondence which requires urgent action. The clinic builder and bar code facility will ensure patient identifiable demographics are attached to every piece of correspondence automatically.”

This is another example of how an NHS trust can reduce procurement complexities by purchasing BigHand direct through the SPRINT II IT framework with SCC, and removing the need to go through a long drawn out tender process.

BigHand now has 48 deployments in the UK Healthcare market, importantly including 26 NHS Trust wide rollouts incorporating over 17,000 users.

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 13, 2012

Snoring Isn’t Sexy, the web’s best way to find a dentist to treat snoring and sleep apnea, announces the launch of monthly surveys at its new facebook page. Those who “like” the page and answer the survey questions are automatically entered to win valuable prizes.

Snoring can be an early indicator that an airway is not functioning properly during sleep. This can be a warning of a more serious condition known as sleep apnea. 20 to 40 million people in the United States suffer from obstructive sleep apnea and the medical problems associated with it (heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, stroke, diabetes, ED) as well as daytime sleepiness which can lead to vehicular and job related accidents.

Yet 85 – 90% of those with sleep apnea are undiagnosed and untreated. The public remains largely unaware of the seriousness of the problem that even simple snoring can cause and even more are unaware that specially educated dentists can help.

“Millions of people who suffer with obstructive sleep apnea remain undiagnosed and untreated.” said Laurence Barsh, DMD, President and Founder of Snoring Isn’t Sexy. “Thousands more cannot tolerate their prescribed CPAP device. Dentists who have received training in oral appliance therapy for snoring and sleep apnea can screen for sleep apnea and, working with physicians, treat many instances of sleep apnea.”

“The problem has been” continued Dr. Barsh “that the public remains unaware of dentistry’s role and responsibility in this field. Social media, including Facebook and Twitter, is now one of the best ways to reach the public and a survey, in particular, provides the opportunity to actively involve people in the learning process. A prize awarded when the survey is completed encourages participation.”
